From David Brickman’s Get Visual
“I am most impressed by Apfel, who I’ve followed for a long time, and who seems in recent years to have burst through into a marvelous world of abstraction. In her layered images, old-time ephemera are given new life with the vibrant colors of today. Nearly photographic realism contrasts with built-up areas and edges of paint to create complexity in these compositions.”

Times Union’s review by William Jaeger: Albany Center Gallery shares region’s best
“Apfel’s two works made of just numbers take this approach to another level, making the reading necessarily abstract, and also suggesting a code or logic that will (and must) escape us. And this makes you look further, never frustrated. Apfel has still other related works with text not collaged together but typed out in rectilinear masses, often next to a similar geometric counterweight of plain color-black or deep teal.”

Studio Wall
The Arts Center of the Capital Region, Troy, NY

From David Brickman’s review on Get Visual:
In the Arts Center’s Foyer Gallery, is a sweet, strong exhibition by Fern Apfel titled Studio Wall. Apfel is a longtime favorite of mine, and this collection shows why – modestly sized but with an ambitious mix of media, Apfel’s art is like a cultural note-taking process with beauty as a requirement.

Hudson River Contemporary: Works on Paper
The Boscobel Exhibition Gallery, Garrison, NY

75th Annual Artists of the Mohawk-Hudson Region
Albany Institute of History & Art, Albany, NY

From David Brickman’s review on Get Visual:
Among the highlights for me were new works by familiar names: Richard Garrison’s four wittily bloodless Circular Color Schemes; another set of four works by Fern Apfel that blend color-field abstraction with simple realism; Paul Mauren’s wall-hung aluminum and wood sculptures; two fine color portraits by photographer Peter Crabtree; and two “non-narrative silent videos” by Bill Jaeger.
